We have made applying for a higher degree by research as simple as possible. You can apply by following these steps:

3. Prepare your documentation

The following documents are required to support your application. Please note that if all required documents are not provided this may result in delays processing your application and a delayed start date, or missing an admission or scholarship deadline.

Note: If any of your documentation is in a language other than English, UQ will require a copy of both the original language document and an official translation.

  • Academic CV
  • Academic transcript for all post-secondary study undertaken, complete or incomplete, including the institution grading scale
    • NB: academic transcripts can also be referred to as an academic record, a diploma supplement, a statement of learning, a record of achievement
  • Award certificates/testamurs for all completed post-secondary study. If you are from China you must provide three documents, your transcript, award certificate and graduate statement/certificate.
    • NB: this is a legal document, and imprinted with the university seal. It will state the name of your qualification and the area(s) of major study.
  • Evidence for meeting UQ's English language proficiency requirements (which must be valid at commencement date)
  • A copy of your Passport (the information page with your photo only) - to verify your identity and ensure offers are issued correctly.
  • Contact details from two referees who can best comment on your prior research experience. UQ will contact your referees directly for a report, but you will need to enter their details into the application form.

Please upload all documents as PDF files, not Word documents and use the naming convention - LAST-NAME_firstname_document-name.

UQ will accept scanned copies of your original documents. You must retain the original hard copy documentation used for your application (e.g. transcripts, identity documents, etc.) for the duration of your studies..

Many Schools and Institutes have additional requirements such as a research proposal. Your Principal Advisor will be able to answer any questions you have about this.

Other documentation, originals or certified copies, may be required depending on your individual circumstances, for example:

  • A scholarship offer or financial guarantee, if you have already been successful for scholarship or sponsorship
  • Evidence of change of name
  • Proof of citizenship, if you are not a citizen of Australia or New Zealand by birth
  • Prior higher degree by research program details – if a completed program, please provide a transcript and award certificate; if an incomplete program, provide a transcript.
