We have made applying for a higher degree by research as simple as possible. You can apply by following these steps:

4. Apply online

Once you have identified your research interests and a potential supervisor, you need to complete the application form and provide documentation to support your application. The information provided will be used to:

  • assess your suitability for undertaking a higher degree by research with the university
  • investigate UQ’s capacity to provide you with an advisory team and research facilities
  • determine if there are adequate project funds, general infrastructure and support services available

If you wish to be considered for a competitive, merit-based stipend scholarship simply indicate this on the application form. There is no need to fill out a separate application form. Application deadlines exist for scholarship consideration and you must check these before indicating your commencement research quarter in the online application. If you only require a tuition fee scholarship you do not need to tick this box, but please note this in a comment in your application.

Please understand that once your application is submitted there are a number of processes that still need to occur before it can be assessed. These include school/institute specific reviews and requirements, responses from your referee reports, confirmation of school/institute support. In particular when applying for UQ scholarships a decision by the school/institute as to whether they will put your application forward for consideration in the scholarship round may not be able to be made until the closing date for applications has passed. For these reasons we recommend you apply at least 4~6 weeks prior to any advertised scholarship closing dates to increase your chances of being considered.

Commencement in a research quarter is fixed to a specific period If you are not applying in the UQ scholarship rounds you should apply at least 12 weeks prior to the research quarter commencement date. International students may need to apply much earlier for visa reasons.

Australia applies sanctions to some countries and individuals in particular circumstances. It is recommended that international applicants review the information on UN and Australian Autonomous Sanctions to assess whether they apply to your project, before submitting an application.

Some schools or institutes may require you to complete an IP agreement as a condition of enrolment.

UQ will contact you during the assessment process to provide further information.

If we need you to provide additional documentation, such as a research proposal, we will let you know.

You may also be contacted to consider alternate supervisors or schools/institutes, particularly if you have not been in contact with your nominated supervisor prior to application.

Once the assessment process is complete you will be formally notified of the outcome of your application.

If you have applied for a UQ scholarship you will be advised of the decision at the conclusion of the scholarship round.

If you receive an unconditional offer of admission and/or an offer of scholarship support, you are required to formally accept or decline the offer(s).
