Developing nanomedicine against amyloid diseases

Project opportunity

This Earmarked Scholarship project is aligned with a recently awarded Category 1 research grant. It offers you the opportunity to work with leading researchers and contribute to large projects of national significance.

A PhD position is available to commence in July-October 2021 in Prof. Davis Group.

The prospective HDR student will work on the design and development of nanomedicine against amyloid diseases.

Amyloid diseases are global pandemic afflicting aging population with progressive pathologies such as type-2-diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases and arthritis. A protein misfolding and aggregation cascade is the core pathophysioloigcal element driving these disease processes. Under this project, the student will:

  1. study how different conditions such as microbial infections and distal inflammations can accelerate or trigger early onset of amyloid diseases and
  2. design nanomedicine with rational biochemical structure to inhibit and slow down the pathogenesis of amyloid diseases.

The student will be supervised by Prof. Tom Davis and Dr. Ibrahim Javed and other appropriate supervisory arrangements will apply based on the direction of the project.

Scholarship value

As a scholarship recipient, you'll receive:

  • living stipend of $32,192 per annum tax free (2023 rate), indexed annually
  • tuition fees covered
  • single Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Preferred educational background

Your application will be assessed on a competitive basis.

We take into account your

  • previous academic record
  • publication record
  • honours and awards
  • employment history.

A working knowledge of protein biochemistry, microbiology, pharmaceutics and pharmacology would be of benefit to someone working on this project.

The applicant will demonstrate academic achievement in the field(s) of nanomedicine and the potential for scholastic success.

A background or knowledge of chemistry, biology, pharmacology and pharmaceutics is highly desirable.

Latest commencement date

If you are the successful candidate, you must commence by Research Quarter 1, 2024. You should apply at least 3 months prior to the research quarter commencement date.

If you are an international applicant, you may need to apply much earlier for visa requirements.

How to apply

You apply for this project as part of your PhD program application.
